After revealing my value grades, I was left…well…empty. We know it’s not as simply as the perfect world of extracting value from a draft pick and it’s also not a perfect science. I intended to do a needs based grade alone, but I was too curious and took it a step further. This list will be a needs PLUS value grade. Surprise, it won’t be a perfect science either, but it sure is fun.
So, to do this, we take the Value ratio and add in a needs grade. The needs grade is based upon a number assigned to the teams biggest need down to it’s smallest need with no number lower than zero. The scale would be 10 at the highest and zero at the lowest. Then we add that number to the value ratio. Here’s an example:
Bryce Young was the #1 prospect on the Scouts.com big board, that’s a value ratio of 0. The Panthers #1 need (according to The Draft Network big board and pretty much everyone else) was QB. That is rated as a 10. Value (0) + Need (10) = 10. We add that result to all the other Carolina results and take the average, in this case, a -27 result is given and a grade of C+.
We all know that this is all speculation and a lot of gold turns up in those no name under-valued picks. In the meantime, enjoy the results and let me know your thoughts on your teams grade.
